Severe OCD Treatment and Support in Florida

Obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD, is typically mischaracterized in the media as a joke, an endearing quirk, or an eccentric need for order and tidiness. In reality, the disorder is much more serious than that.

OCD is associated with persistent, intrusive, and unwanted thoughts that are hard to shake, and compulsive behaviors that must be completed, not by choice, but out of a desperate need to relieve unbearable anxiety. These behaviors often take up many hours of a person's day, almost as if it’s a second job, narrowing a person’s life until all that is left are obsessive thoughts and the rituals that bring a temporary relief from them.

But treatment is possible. And at Helios West Palm, we deliver that treatment within our residential program in sunny South Florida, designed for adults whose OCD needs more than weekly therapy sessions can give.

What are the four types of OCD?

OCD symptoms can often be categorized into several classifications. The most commonly referenced groups are contamination-related OCD, harm-related OCD, symmetry and ordering OCD, and purely obsessional OCD. Other considerations include scrupulosity, relationship-related OCD, and other OCD-related disorders such as trichotillomania and hoarding disorder. At Helios West Palm, we treat OCD according to each patient’s individual compulsive patterns and obsessive thoughts.

How often is OCD misdiagnosed?

OCD is frequently misdiagnosed — often as generalized anxiety disorder, depression, or, in cases of harm OCD, as psychosis or a personality disorder. Studies suggest that the average time between symptom onset and accurate diagnosis is approximately 14-17 years. This delay significantly impacts outcomes, which is why comprehensive evaluation at admission is so important.

What causes OCD to get worse?

OCD symptoms may worsen when compulsive behaviors are continued over an extended period of time and lead to an increase in anxiety, or when a patient experiences severe stressors or has a co-occurring disorder that is untreated or has not received adequate treatment. Evidence-based ERP breaks the connection between compulsive behavior and anxiety due to obsessive thoughts.

Can OCD be treated with therapy alone, without medication?

Yes. ERP-based cognitive behavioral therapy is effective for OCD, whether used alone or with medication. However, studies have shown that combining ERP with SSRIs provides patients with the best possible clinical outcome. At Helios West Palm, we collaboratively make the best medication decision based on each patient’s unique preferences and needs.

Does Helios West Palm treat OCD alongside other conditions?

Yes. It is common for a patient with OCD to also have major depressive disorder, an anxiety disorder, or other physical or mental health diagnoses. During the patient evaluation process, we will identify all relevant clinical diagnoses and create a comprehensive treatment plan to address all of them.

Does insurance cover OCD treatment in a residential program in Florida?

Yes. Most large health insurers cover residential OCD treatment. The Helios West Palm admissions team will verify your insurance coverage and provide an overview of your benefits prior to making a final decision.
