Not everyone who is struggling with mental health needs the same level of treatment and support. The reverse is also true: not every form of support is designed to treat the same kind of need.
That is why there are different levels of psychiatric care available for people with varying levels of mental health challenges. These levels of care are tailored to each individual’s needs, based on the severity of their condition and the type and intensity of treatment they may require.
At Helios West Palm, we provide a range of mental health care services to meet adults at every stage of their recovery journey. Whether it is immediate stabilization during an acute crisis, long-term residential care for an intensive program of healing, or transition to daily life and help with establishing a healthy lifestyle, we have a continuum of care that meets your needs at each step.
Understanding the care choices available to you and your loved ones is essential. Having the right type of care at the right time can make a meaningful difference in the outcome of treatment.
A mental health crisis can strike without warning. Whether that means that symptoms have become too severe for outpatient treatment, a breaking point after prolonged mental illness, or a situation that is putting them or others at risk of serious harm, crisis stabilization is the first response
Crisis stabilization is the first step in treatment for many people experiencing a significant escalation in the severity of their mental health condition. At Helios West Palm, we don’t directly provide crisis stabilization, but we can connect you or your loved one with the care they need to stabilize.
It also accomplishes the following:
- Evaluating the level of care needed and establishing safety
- Beginning the psychiatric evaluation process
- Laying the groundwork for what will happen next, so that deeper recovery work can proceed once the patient has stabilized
Crisis stabilization alone is not a complete treatment. Rather, it is the opportunity to receive continual support until a person can enter a residential treatment program and continue to receive the appropriate level of clinical care in a structured and supported environment. Those who need psychiatric stabilization but not residential support will be referred to outside providers for follow-up services and treatment.
If you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health emergency, please contact our admissions team or call 911 if there is an immediate risk of danger.
Residential Program
The Helios West Palm residential program is the most intensive component of our full continuum of care and our most comprehensive treatment for those who need intensive support for their mental health condition. The residential program provides 24/7 immersive inpatient treatment for adults diagnosed with mental illness who require more assistance than outpatient services can offer.
The Helios West Palm residential program provides 24/7 psychiatric monitoring, comprehensive medical care, and a holistic schedule of therapy and rehabilitation supported by evidence-based practices.
The residential program is appropriate for people experiencing significant impairment in daily life, for whom outpatient therapy is not enough, and for those who have not been successful in undergoing previous treatment elsewhere and require an approach that addresses the underlying causes of their symptoms rather than the symptoms themselves.
Each patient’s length of stay is individualized and determined by clinical progress, the treatment team’s recommendations, and the patient’s treatment goals. Care is designed around the person, not a fixed or restricted timeline.
Aftercare
Recovery doesn’t end just because treatment does. Transitioning out of a highly structured inpatient program is a critical period in the overall journey of recovery. Very often, how this transition is managed is a primary factor in long-term success.
At Helios West Palm, aftercare planning starts well before your actual discharge date. The clinical team works closely with each patient to create a personalized aftercare roadmap based on personal needs, support system, and resources available when transitioning back to daily life. Examples of possible aftercare options include referral to outpatient therapy, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), partial hospitalization programs (PHP), community mental health services, support groups, and medication management from qualified psychiatric providers.
Establishing an ongoing level of care after completing residential treatment is critical to ensure that the progress made during treatment continues. Throughout this transition, Helios West Palm remains committed to providing resources to support patients with their aftercare.
How to Determine the Right Level of Care
When deciding on the appropriate level of care for yourself or a loved one, it should not be a decision made alone — there are options available to assist you with that process. The best starting point is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation performed by a qualified mental health professional. The evaluation will examine the whole person and all aspects of the mental health symptoms present, including the nature and severity of the symptoms, the degree to which the mental health condition impacts daily functioning, past treatment, co-occurring substance use disorders, and the availability of a support system outside of the clinical environment.
Based on the comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, the clinician will make a recommendation for the appropriate level of care, whether it is inpatient hospitalization, residential treatment, outpatient treatment, or a combination, in order to match the level of support to the degree of need, and to adjust that match as the person’s condition changes.
If you need additional assistance determining the appropriate level of care, our admissions team will walk you through the process, answer questions, and help determine whether Helios West Palm is the right fit for you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Levels of Care
How do I know which level of care is right for me or my loved one?
The most reliable way to determine the appropriate level of care is through a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. This assessment looks at symptom severity, daily functioning, treatment history, and support systems to recommend the level of care that best fits your situation.
Does Helios West Palm offer outpatient programs?
Helios West Palm primarily provides residential treatment services. For those who need outpatient treatment or are transitioning out of our residential program, we will make referrals to trusted outpatient and intensive outpatient providers to ensure continuity of care.
Can someone move between different levels of care during treatment?
Yes. Mental health treatment is designed to be flexible. Individuals may step up to a higher level of care if symptoms worsen or require more support, or step down to a lower level of care as they stabilize and gain independence. This ensures that treatment continues to match changing needs throughout recovery.
Why is it important to have a continuum of care?
A continuum of care ensures that individuals receive the right level of support at every stage of recovery. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, treatment evolves alongside a person’s progress, helping maintain stability, reduce setbacks, and support long-term mental health outcomes.
What happens during the transition between levels of care?
Transitions are carefully planned by the clinical team to ensure continuity and minimize disruption. This may include coordinating referrals, adjusting treatment plans, and providing guidance on the next phase of care so individuals continue to receive appropriate support as they move forward in recovery.
