Borderline Personality Disorder Explained: Signs, Causes, and BPD Treatment Options

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a confusing and often painful condition to live with.

Those suffering from this disorder do not feel emotions as others do. Their feelings are expressed loudly, intensely, and can feel overwhelming, uncontrollable, and exhausting to the person experiencing them. These loud emotions can destabilize important relationships, erode a sense of self, and leave someone feeling chronically alone and misunderstood by doctors, significant others, and even themselves.

The main point commonly missing in our current culture regarding this disorder is that people with BPD are not "difficult." They are suffering, and evidence-based treatments can provide long-lasting improvements and recovery. At Helios West Palm, we treat BPD using a structured, evidence-based, and intensive residential program with expert clinicians who specialize in the disorder's complexities.

Can BPD go away?

Although BPD usually does not go away by itself, research indicates that significant and long-term improvement is possible with proper evidence-based treatment, particularly DBT. According to studies of BPD, after sustained treatment, 70%–85% of people with BPD no longer meet the criteria for diagnosis.[11] The patterns associated with BPD can change; they aren’t permanent.

What is the most effective treatment for borderline personality disorder?

The gold standard treatment for BPD is dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). There are numerous randomized controlled studies supporting its efficacy, noting reductions in self-harming behaviors, suicidal ideation, and hospitalizations.

How do you help someone with BPD during an episode?

When another person is having an emotional breakdown, the most effective response is to provide emotional support and validation without reinforcing the self-destructive behaviors. Remain calm, avoid escalating the situation, and express care without any judgment. Family therapy services provided by Helios West Palm enable us to support families with the skills and knowledge to respond to their loved ones during a crisis while still protecting themselves.

Is BPD the same as bipolar disorder?

No. While there may be similarities in external characteristics and symptoms, such as impulsiveness and mood swings, there are significant differences. Bipolar disorder consists of distinct manic episodes and depressive episodes that last from several days to several weeks, whereas BPD consists of a pattern of unregulated emotions and emotional responses to interpersonal events, which occur over a range of time and are usually measured in hours. As a result, bipolar disorder and BPD have different treatment approaches and are diagnosed using different criteria.

Does Helios West Palm treat BPD alongside other conditions?

Yes. BPD frequently co-occurs with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, PTSD, and other psychiatric disorders. Our comprehensive evaluation process includes reviewing the entire clinical picture, so your treatment plan addresses BPD along with any other diagnoses.
