Understanding the Complexity of Mental Health Conditions

Mental health doesn’t always fit neatly into one category. A lot of people come in thinking they have one issue, only to realize there are a few different things going on at the same time, and their symptoms may change over time and in new ways as their environment (stressors, etc.) and their personal life experiences change.[2] Therefore, it is important to take a holistic look at the big picture. At Helios West Palm, there is a focus on the underlying cause of the symptoms (rather than labeling the diagnosis itself) so that one can gain an understanding of the connections between them and how this affects each person on a daily basis.

The Importance of Getting the Right Diagnosis

An accurate and timely diagnosis makes a much larger impact than most people may anticipate.[3] Often, people who are experiencing symptoms will try out numerous types of therapy, support, etc., for many years without significant progress made toward improving their circumstances, often due to an underlying cause/theme not being fully diagnosed and/or treated.

To be truly effective, the evaluation process is ongoing, not a single occurrence done once at the beginning. As treatment moves forward, new patterns can emerge and things can become clearer. When that happens, the approach can shift with it. The goal is to make sure treatment stays relevant to what you’re actually experiencing, not just what was initially assumed.

Part of the therapeutic process is to help the individual identify and become willing to change their patterns by way of developing new tools to cope with difficult times as they arise, slowing down to develop more self-awareness, etc. As you remain committed to your own changes, they will become part of your skill set, ultimately making everyday living manageable.

Does Helios West Palm treat all mental health conditions?

Helios West Palm provides treatment for a wide variety of psychiatric disorders in our program, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, personality disorders, PTSD, OCDs, dissociative disorders, ADHD, and dual diagnosis. If you are unsure if your diagnosis or situation can be treated at Helios West Palm, please call our admissions team, and they can help you determine if our facility is a good fit.

Do you treat substance use disorders?

Helios West Palm is a stand-alone behavioral health facility. We do not provide primary substance abuse medical treatment or detoxification services, but we do treat patients with a co-occurring substance use disorder as a secondary concern, alongside a primary mental health diagnosis through an integrated treatment program. Treatment for a primary substance abuse disorder is outside the scope of treatment we provide.

What if I have more than one diagnosis?

Many of our clients have multiple, complex diagnostic conditions with co-occurring mental health symptoms that affect one another. Our individualized treatment approach will address these unique conditions in a comprehensive manner. At admission, you will be thoroughly evaluated to ensure that all relevant diagnoses will be properly identified and addressed in the treatment plan.

How do I know if my condition requires residential treatment?

If someone’s mental health symptoms have a significant negative impact on their ability to function and have not responded adequately to outpatient treatment, they may require intensive residential treatment. Our admissions team will be able to evaluate your symptoms to help you decide if residential treatment is the appropriate level of care for your needs.
