Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in West Palm Beach, Florida

Some people don’t just feel emotions, they experience them intensely and at a volume so loud that most people can’t imagine. These emotions hit hard, come out of seemingly nowhere, and take a long time to fade. Situations that most people would see as a minor annoyance are overwhelming experiences, and many of the strategies that help others — like counting to ten, talking through feelings, or breathing — aren't effective for controlling emotions that big and loud.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is built to help those people. DBT doesn't ask clients to feel less; it helps them manage their feelings skillfully and intentionally, without creating additional problems or damaging relationships. At Helios West Palm, DBT is a foundation of our inpatient mental health program and is delivered with the clinical depth and consistency each patient needs.

What is DBT therapy good for?

DBT has been proven effective for borderline personality disorder, chronic self-harm, suicidal ideation, eating disorders, substance use disorders, bipolar disorder, and many other conditions involving extreme emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and difficulty maintaining relationships. DBT has also been found to be effective for PTSD, ADHD, and co-occurring disorders.

How long does DBT therapy take?

A typical outpatient DBT program is 12 months, consisting of four skill-building modules. Due to the nature of a residential treatment program, Helios West Palm has a significantly greater capacity for rapid progression through DBT programming, resulting in increased skill acquisition. The clinical staff will work with each patient to establish goals and create realistic timelines for achieving them.

How many DBT skills are there?

There are roughly 50 skills within the DBT framework, organized into four skill sets — mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Patients will receive education about the most applicable skills for their individual treatment plan, with particular focus on the modules most relevant to their diagnosis.

Can DBT be combined with other therapies?

Yes — and at Helios West Palm, it always is. DBT is most effective when integrated with individual therapy, CBT, trauma-informed care, and medication management as part of a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan.

Does insurance cover DBT?

Most major health insurance plans provide coverage for DBT when it is provided as part of a mental health treatment program. Our admissions team will verify your individual benefits and clearly outline your coverage prior to enrollment.
