Mental Health Therapies at Helios West Palm

Therapy is the primary driver of mental health recovery, but not all therapies are appropriate for every situation. For effective treatment to occur, the appropriate type of therapy must be delivered with clinical accuracy at the right time and to the right person. The most effective, transformative therapy happens when it is matched with the particular patient and their specific circumstances.

At Helios West Palm, therapy is not a universally applied single modality. Therapy is a combination of carefully selected and individualized holistic approaches and evidence-based therapeutic interventions based on each patient's history, diagnosis, and treatment goals. Our clinical staff uses a range of therapies from cognitive structured approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) to trauma-focused therapies, expressive therapies, and family therapy.

No matter what mental health or co-occurring disorder you are struggling with, therapy can provide you with the outlet and tools you need for lasting recovery. Below is a brief overview of the therapy modalities provided.

Therapy works — but only when it is matched to a person’s needs and provided in a safe and stable environment with properly trained staff. Does insurance cover therapy in a mental health program?

Yes. Under the Mental Health Parity Act, most major insurance plans will cover residential and inpatient therapy as part of mental health treatment, including individual therapy sessions, group therapy, and psychiatric services. Each insurer has different specifications for what is covered — including copay, deductible, and the number of services. Our admissions team will contact your insurance company before you make any decisions to provide a complete understanding of your benefits.

How are therapies selected for each patient?

When you first arrive at Helios West Palm, you will undergo a complete psychiatric evaluation by a qualified medical provider. Using the information from this evaluation, the clinical team develops a treatment plan specific to the diagnosis, history, and goals of the patient in determining the best therapies to use. Each person’s treatment plan is unique to them.

What is the difference between CBT and DBT?

Both are forms of psychotherapy, and both are evidence-based, but they focus on different clinical needs. CBT focuses on identifying and changing distorted thought processes that lead to emotional distress and unhelpful behaviors. DBT was developed to treat people with emotional dysregulation issues, especially those with Borderline Personality Disorder. DBT focuses on building real-life skills such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Some patients benefit from both CBT and DBT.

Can family members be involved in therapy at Helios West Palm?

Yes. We recommend and support family therapy sessions through our family program. If the patient believes they will benefit from having family members in sessions, they will sign a consent form allowing family to participate. Research shows that having families involved in the recovery process increases positive outcomes.
